SOLA expects students to treat the classroom as a place of learning, and to adopt a mature academic attitude. Do you anticipate having difficulty with any of the following: arriving to class on time and with all of your materials, refraining from personal side conversations during class, maintaining a calm demeanor, raising your hand before speaking, turning in work on time, responding positively to challenge, not speaking over your classmates, speaking respectfully to your teachers and classmates even when in disagreement or a state of confusion?

When tensions arise between community members, our approach is to engage in supportive, constructive dialogue to resolve the tensions and move forward together. Are you open to participating honestly in dialogue-based solutions to interpersonal conflict?

In the classroom, in the fields, and on trips, students will be expected to work together, often as a team, to learn and to achieve community-based growth. Your classmates will depend on your presence, even in moments when you may be experiencing personal struggle. Do you anticipate any difficulty in being a steady, reliable member of a team in this way?

SOLA seeks to put its soon-to-be adults in touch with their innate gifts, to develop not merely a superficial sort of self-confidence, but a deep and genuine one: faith in one’s own powers to examine things, solve problems, answer questions, make decisions, and to trust in one’s own heart to suggest purpose and moral direction in life. Becoming secure in this way does not come easily, and it requires real work. SOLA is dedicated to nurturing the adolescent learner's authentic sense of self, critical thinking capacities & independence. We strongly encourage appropriate use of technology and the internet to allow healthy emotional development and authentic learning to occur. These efforts can be undermined by over-exposure to media that hinders healthy self image, or over reliance on the internet as a source of information and education. We encourage SOLA families to make an effort to monitor media exposure as best as they can within their family culture.

SOLA strives to create a healthy class culture & safe, harmonious learning environment for all students. We are dedicated to serving a community of learners with diverse learning styles and abilities. However, there may be circumstances in which a student's behavioral or developmental needs are beyond our capacities. In keeping with these considerations, all new students are subject to mutual, provisional approval for 30 days. Additionally, we reserve the right to revoke membership if any behavioral or cognitive issues come to light that were not revealed or discussed before applying.
